Welcome to the start of your safari and welcome to Tanzania! You've chosen a fantastic place for your safari journey and we'll get you started with an introductory briefing before we head out to begin the trip you've been dreaming of.

Mt Kilimanjaro is more than Africa’s highest peak. It is also one of the continent’s most challenging yet rewarding expeditions.

Pickup at Arusha with guide and mountain crews, then drive to Marangu for start to climb Mountain, Machame Gate

Located along the Machame Route for climbing Africa's tallest mountain, Machame Camp (2835m) is a busy campsite with plenty of space to pitch a tent and there are still a few trees around at this altitude. The views are wonderful, especially where Mt Kilimanjaro rises to the north, and there are plenty of other travelers for you to meet.

Shira 2 Camp

Camping

Camp among the rocks and moorlands on the slopes of Mt Kilimanjaro. Located as the third campsite along the Shira and Lemosho routes up and down the mountain, Shira 2 sits at an altitude of 3890m/12,762ft, so is an important step in acclimatizing to the high altitudes. There are no facilities – only cleared areas where you can pitch a tent.

Along a number of routes that climb Mt Kilimanjaro, including the Machame Route, Barranco Camp (3983m) is typical of the desert-like landscapes that occur here above the tree line. You'll be camping here (there are no huts or buildings for accommodation), and you'll wake up to views of the summit from the camping area.

Barafu Camp

Barafu Camp, which lies along a number of climbing routes on Mt Kilimanjaro, is at an altitude of 4681m. The name 'barafu' means 'ice' in Swahili, which refers to the cold temperatures that you will encounter here. The views are big and the landscape is bare, and there are always plenty of other climbers camping at Barafu.

Day 5

Uhuru Peak

Stand on Africa's highest point (5895m) when you make it all the way to Uhuru Peak. The summit of Mt Kilimanjaro looks out from the Kibo crater rim, and the views go deep down into Kenya and Tanzania. Admire the glaciers and enjoy that feeling of achievement.

You know you're on the way down when you stay at Mweka Camp, a descent-only camp along four different routes down from the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro. Here at an altitude of 3060m, you can start to breathe a little easier, and there's always a good feeling with other climbers happy and excited to be on the way down. The views here are spectacular.

Day 7

Tarangire National Park

If you’ve never been to Tarangire (and even if you have) you’re in for a real treat. Tarangire is filled with giants – baobab trees all across the park, as well as elephants, lots of them. But that’s just the beginning. Of the big cats, you’ll probably see lions, and cheetahs and leopards are around, too. And it’s impossible to miss the wildebeest, giraffes, hippos, buffaloes and zebras. Your backdrop for all of this is one of the prettiest in northern Tanzania, with a memorable mix of river woodland, open plains and rolling hills. And some vantage points to take it all in.

You'll be going on a guided game drive to look for Tarangire's lions, elephants, cheetahs and more. It's one of the best places to go looking for animals in northern Tanzania.

Tucked away from busy safari trails yet close to both Mto Wa Mbu and Lake Manyara National Park, Suricata Boma Lodge is your excellent base in the area. It's one of few places around Lake Manyara to take advantage of a lakeside position, and everything is good here, from simple bungalow-style rooms to the restaurant, swimming pool and bar.

Day 8

Serengeti National Park

You won’t find many better national parks in Africa than the Serengeti, which has few rivals when it comes to both the numbers and variety of animals. Track down the annual migration of wildebeest and zebra. Enjoy the vast horizons that are perfect for spotting predators (especially lions, leopards, cheetahs and spotted hyenas) and their prey (buffaloes, impalas and kongoni), as well as elephants and giraffes. If you’re really lucky you’ll see a hunt, one of the most exhilarating sights anywhere in the wild. And at every turn, revel in its beauty, with flat-topped acacia trees silhouetted against the setting sun, and so many other classic African safari images.

Activity Day 8

You'll get to know Serengeti National Park in the best possible way on a guided game drive. Led by an expert guide, you'll drive out across the park's famous savannahs to look for the incredible wildlife (big cats, elephants and more) that calls the park home.

Moyo Tented Camp

Tented camp

Your safari tent is a cut above the average at Moyo Tented Camp. Raised on stilts, with a wonderfully large living area, and a cool wood-and-wicker aesthetic, Moyo is a supremely comfortable place to sleep. The camp lies in the Central Serengeti, surrounded by savannah grasslands, acacia trees and some of the Serengeti's best wildlife country. Enjoy fine service and excellent meals as well.

You’ll get to know the Serengeti and its colorful cast of characters even better with another day immersed in its wild beauty.

You'll be joining us in Serengeti National Park for a guided game drive. It's a fantastic opportunity to see some of the animals you came so far to see.

You have so much to look forward to at Ngorongoro Safari Lodge. For a start, staying here puts you close to Ngorongoro Crater, but out in the Maasai countryside away from the tourist crowds. The tents sit on stilts and have large private terraces, wooden floors and leather armchairs or sofas: the tents here really are excellent. You'll also eat well and have ample opportunities to immerse yourself in local Maasai culture.

Day 10

Ngorongoro Crater

Ngorongoro is a special place and the first time that you descend onto the crater floor is like no other safari experience in Africa. This is a world unto itself, one where you’ll encounter the crater’s 600-strong population of hyenas, as well as critically endangered black rhinos. You’ll also find elephants with larger-than-average tusks, and more than 50 lions living in the crater. But it’s the sheer beauty of Ngorongoro that will most likely live longest in your memory. From early morning, mist rises from the crater, revealing steep, forested walls, secret waterways where hippos wallow, and a world of abundant wildlife hidden away from the rest of the world.

Your safari will come to a close, but we hope that your love affair with Africa and with the whole safari experience is just beginning.
