It's time to begin your safari. Welcome to Tanzania! After we greet you and provide you with the trip briefing, we'll take you out to help you discover why so many people think Tanzania is the best place in Africa to go on safari.

Arusha is a fun city to explore, a fascinating urban complement to the thrills on offer elsewhere in northern Tanzania's safari parks. Here you'll get to experience lively streets, tasty local food, and busy markets and museums. More than anything else, it's a window into life in a provincial Tanzanian city.

You shouldn't need earplugs at Arusha Planet Lodge even though you're in the busy city of Arusha, the location in the quieter streets east of the center means noise is rarely an issue. Pickup at Arusha with guide and mountain crews, then drive to Machame for start to climb Mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro

Located along the Machame Route for climbing Africa's tallest mountain, Machame Camp (2835m) is a busy campsite with plenty of space to pitch a tent and there are still a few trees around at this altitude. The views are wonderful, especially where Mt Kilimanjaro rises to the north, and there are plenty of other travelers for you to meet.

We explore the Shira Plateau for a full day. It is a gentle walk east on moorland meadows towards Sh, Mount Kilimanjaro

Along the challenging but rewarding Shira Route that scales Mt Kilimanjaro, Shira Camp 1 is above the tree line, sitting on high-altitude, treeless plains at 3810m above sea level. From the camp you can see both the Kibo volcanic cone (to the north-east) and Mount Meru (west). It's not as busy as some of the camps along other climbing routes, so it can be nice and quiet.

After breakfast, you will leave Shira Camp 2 (3,900m) and start your journey to the key point of the, Mount Kilimanjaro

You can see the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro from Barranco Camp (3983m). It's a stirring backdrop to the campsite, and its high snows are a contrast to the bare, dry landscape that surrounds you here, high above the tree line. Barranco lies along a number of climbing routes, including the popular Machame Route, so there are always lots of people in camp.

In the morning, after breakfast, you start your journey to Barafu Summit Camp (4640m), the starting, Mount Kilimanjaro

Barafu Camp, which lies along a number of climbing routes on Mt Kilimanjaro, is at an altitude of 4681m. The name 'barafu' means 'ice' in Swahili, which refers to the cold temperatures that you will encounter here. The views are big and the landscape is bare, and there are always plenty of other climbers camping at Barafu.

Lake Manyara National Park

Lake Manyara is a world-class wildlife-viewing destination, and it offers you some really special safari experiences. For a start, it has one of the few lion populations in Africa which are known to climb trees. It's also famous for its elephants, and it's not unusual to drive along a forest track only to have to stop suddenly to allow an elephant family to pass. The setting is similarly superb, with the park's thin, but dense strip of forest wedged between a bird-rich lake and the steep cliffs of the Rift Valley escarpment.

Take a guided game drive around the forests and along the lakeshore of Lake Manyara National Park, and look for elephants and tree-climbing lions, all in the company of an expert guide.

Serengeti National Park

Unesco World Heritage–listed Serengeti National Park will almost certainly be one of the highlights of your safari, and it's the kind of place that very quickly becomes a favorite. That's partly because of the wildlife: this is one of the best places anywhere to see lions, leopards and cheetahs. Although every big cat sighting is special, they're only a part of the story here: there's a good chance you'll also see elephants, zebras, giraffes, wildebeest, buffaloes and spotted hyenas and much more. Many travelers' love affair with the Serengeti is also because of its landscapes: expect vast savannah grasslands, acacia trees and pretty hill country.

Ngorongoro Crater

Your day in and around Ngorongoro Crater could just be one of the most memorable of your whole safari. You’ll explore the crater rim and then drive down onto the crater floor, where the critically endangered black rhinos are the stars of an astonishing wildlife show. You’ll almost certainly see large-tusked elephants, at least one of the Ngorongoro’s four lion prides, and wandering clans of spotted hyenas. It also just happens to be one of Africa’s most beautiful corners, a hidden world where you’ll be surrounded by steep, deep-green crater walls, a salt lake, forests and hippo-filled waterways.

On this morning's guided game drive, we'll take you down into Ngorongoro Crater; the drive down is one of the most thrilling possible approaches for a day of wildlife viewing. You'll be down in the crater for most of the day looking for lions, hyenas, black rhinos and more.

Although you're close to Karatu, you're nicely removed from the main road that connects Ngorongoro Crater with Lake Manyara National Park. Zanzibar Island is a fascinating place to explore. The long, beautiful beaches that hem in this tropical Indian Ocean island are a big part of its appeal. Another highlight is the atmospheric old Stone Town, a time-warped knot of winding alleys that leads past some fine historic buildings and bustling spice-laden markets. Offshore, a series of fringing reefs and coral gardens offers wonderful snorkeling and diving too.
